I am a graduate student working on a new truck battery. I would appreciate your help with answers to the following questions: (please e-mail answers) 1. What is the average and maximum truck lifetime? 2. What is the average and maximum truck engine lifetime? 3. What is the average truck battery lifetime?

4. How many batteries are used in the truck? Is it regular practice, that trucks today have 4 starter batteries; only two are needed to deliver the required CCA's, the remaining two are used to power loads in the cabin like coffee maker, AC, etc.? If this is the case, where are the additional batteries installed? 5. Would it be an advantage, if batteries would have a lower weight but the same size? 6. What is the maximum accepted weight of a battery?

7. What would you prefer among the following alternatives? · A 50 pound maintenance free battery, providing the required CCA, with a reserve capacity of 200 min and an average lifetime of 3 years, or A 100 pound battery, providing required CCA, with a reserve capacity of 400 min and an average lifetime of 6 years

8. If a sealed maintenance free non-poluting battery is installed in the cabin (as in some Mazda models), would it be a problem to the driver? 9. How many times a day on average is the truck engine started?

10. What is the average idling time of a truck? (as a percentage of working hours) What is typical duration of idling each time (5 min, 0.5 hour, 5 hours)? 11. What are the most popular on-board electrical accessories operated during long parking? 12. If the battery could supply all the truck on-board consumers while the engine is off, would the driver avoid idling? 13. What are the expected savings from idling avoidance? 14. How long can batteries, installed nowadays, supply power when the engine is off? 15. What do you think about different Idling Avoidance Devices (APUs) available on the market?
